There are a lot of steps that go into making a successful T-Shirt design but we’ve simplified it into these basic steps:
T-Shirt Design Concept
Without a good design concept, no amount of graphic art will save you. People like witty sayings and easy concise messages that give instant gratification. Sometimes the image in itself is enough to get the point across. Amateur designers a lot of times make the mistake of trying to write a novel on the shirt. Where would you look for some imagery to start with? Try a Google image search or look for some quality clipart on a site like 123RF Stock Photos. Finding a cool graphic may be enough to spark your creative drive into production mode!
Design Research – Competitive T-Shirt Designs
Doing your homework with what other people have done will definitely increase your chance of selling a successful T-Shirt design. Let’s say that you have a cool design concept for an Oktoberfest shirt. Going to popular T-Shirt sites like Zazzle and CafePress and doing a search on “Oktoberfest shirts” will bring up what other people have done. The shirt designs at the top of the list are the most popular designs sorted by the traffic that each product receives. This is the time to ask yourself, “what is it about these designs that makes them so popular”? Is it a catchy saying? Is it a well done colorful design? Is it just simple to understand? If it is a simple, catchy concept, but the design is poorly executed, maybe this is an opportunity for you to do something better!
The Right Tools for the Job!
Have you ever used a knife or screwdriver to open a paint can and someone yells at you, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING”?! Well that’s how we feel when people use cheap software to design their T-Shirts or novelty gifts. We believe in high end design software such as Adobe products (i.e. Adobe Illustrator CS5 and Adobe Photoshop CS5 ).
